GE CF34-8C1 Engine Wins JAA Approval

The CF34-8C1 turbofan engine was awarded a type certificate by the Joint Airworthiness Authorities (JAA) last month, General Electric (Lynn MA) announced recently.

The engine is the powerplant for the Bombardier CRJ700 70-passenger regional jet currently in flight test.

Certified by FAA in November, the CF34-8C1 is rated in the 14,000-pound thrust class and is produced by GE Aircraft Engines with Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) as a risk-and-revenue-sharing participant. IHI is responsible for development and production of approximately 30% of the engine, including the low-pressure turbine, high-pressure compressor and some accessories.

Other CF34-8 series engines, now in development, include the CF34-8D for the Fairchild Dornier 528JET and 728JET regional aircraft and the CF34-8E for the Embraer ERJ170 regional aircraft.
